Senior Thesis Exhibitions 2010!

It's that time of the year! Congratulations to our graduating seniors.

Arkady Daniel

Bio

Uwoduhi Legends, brings new life to traditional Native American legends and beliefs. Hood College senior, Arkady Daniel, reveals the culmination of four years of hard work and development in her exhibit, Uwoduhi Legends. Daniel’s archaeological studies, personal research, and the discovery of her own Native American heritage drove her to study the cultures at a deeper level where she found her inspiration in the process of her exploration. She wanted to focus on a people, she believes, is often obscured in the fringes of history, a people who, even through hardship and adversity, has maintained a level of dignity and beauty.

Ayelet Baruch

Biography

Jerusalem of Gold is a magnetic force in Ayelet Baruch’s life. In July she will travel back to Israel to voluntarily join the Israeli Military service. Ayelet was born in Israel and moved to the states as an infant. The call of her birthplace is so strong that Ayelet returns, year after year to spend more time in a land rich with culture and art. Drawing on her experiences, Ayelet integrates her love of Judaism/Israel and the creation of clay boxes with moving components as a function of every day objects and religious life.
Thinking Inside the Box is a culmination of both the technical and the conceptual thought behind her work with boxes. The show demonstrates the relationship between the container and the items stored with in.

Devin Gaither

This means that like many synesthetic individuals, Devin has a color response for almost all senses including taste, smell, and sound. Devin Joann Gaither was born in Martinsburg, WV and spent most of her life in Hagerstown, MD. As a B.A. candidate for May 2010, Devin is hoping to attend the University of Southern Maine's Creative Writing M.F.A. program beginning this summer. Jeff Tarleton

Bio

Jeff Tarleton, has always had two constants in life, art and sports. Although most people usually do not associate art and sports, it made sense for Jeff to bring his two worlds together. Tarleton’s current work reflects the two worlds of boxing and painting. Some of Jeff’s inspirations can be found in pieces by Richard Slone and Leroy Neiman.
Originally from Baltimore Jeff Tarleton graduated from Franklin High School in 2006, a current resident of Frederick Maryland, he is pursuing a Major in Art at Hood College. and is activley involved in athletics, ranging from lacrosse to boxing. While a student at Hood College in Frederick Maryland, he maintained both interests by majoring in fine arts and also participating on Hood College Men’s Lacrosse Team. Jeff had interests in many other sports, such as football, and hockey but the sport of boxing has been a constant.
“I see the commonalities between the things I love most, and enjoy blending the two together”. Jeff Tarleton’s art defines who he is, an athlete and an artist.

Laura Harsh

BIO

Iconography can be captured through an illusion; Laura Harsh’s work only needs a thousand words. As a photographer, what Miss Harsh aspires to capture is the imagery of humanity in its trustiest essence; through its authenticity. As a prospective graduate from Hood College, in Frederick Maryland, with a degree in studio art, Harsh captures in a camera what many people tend to look for in life. With her previous education from Hagerstown Community College photography program, Harsh crosses the many dimensions of studio art, and now into the imagery with the good, the bad, and let’s face it, the truth of what we look at in the mirror! The capstone of any professional is being a pioneer; however it is Laura Harsh’s objective with use her talent in photography to bring into to focus the essence of a the value of a picture.

Sarah Balukoff

Artist’s Bio:

When she was small, Sarah Balukoff received a little blue book filled with stories about Greek gods and goddesses. She used this book and its content as her stepping stone to formulate her own perception of mythological figures as ideal, organic forms. Her belief that these fantastic tales and mythological figures are intertwined with nature and earthly elements has influenced her photographic approach.
Miss Balukoff has lived in Frederick, Maryland for nine years and thinks it’s high time to start traveling. She will graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in photography from Hood College in May. Her goal as a photographer? Photograph the world.

Lisa Wells

Biography

Imagine a room filled with three-dimensional objects where visual differences between ceramic models and real, live models are absent. Before involving the other senses, the perception of ceramic models is reality. Lisa Wells often views many aspects of everyday life from a scientific perspective. Since her early stages of education, Lisa has been infatuated with the human body and all of its wonders. She tirelessly studied Biology from high school into her first three years of college, where she claimed Biology: Pre- Med as her major. Senior year Lisa was reintroduced to ceramics and upon switching majors to Studio Arts, the combination of both fields crafted a brand new area of interest. However, as science, society and research has evolved, so have Lisa’s interests in medicine. Surpassing the basics of human anatomy and physiology, Lisa is exploring and examining what happens when reconstructive surgery is used to aid the human body in healing. With clay, Lisa depicts moments from some of the most common surgical procedures in her largest artistic show to date, her senior exhibition, Incisions.
